The 2013 IHSA Competitive Cheerleading State Finals will take place on Friday and Saturday, February 1-2 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. State champions will be crowned in four classes (Small, Medium, Large, Coed) over the course of the weekend. The 2013 edition marks the eighth year of the tournament and the seventh that U.S. Cellular Coliseum has served as the host. The entire event will once again be streamed live on IHSA.tv (www.IHSA.tv), and available to be viewed any time on-demand after the conclusion of the event. The free webcast will feature video of every team’s performance.

SMALL

A new champion will be crowned in the Small Class for the first time in three years, as Columbia has moved up to the Medium Class in 2013 after winning Small Class state titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012. A bevy teams will contend in a class that produced four different champions in four years before Columbia’s title reign. Breese Central (4th) and Rockridge (9th) both placed in the Top 10 a year ago at state and scored Sectional championships this season, while six other Top 10 teams from 2012 return as well, including Somonauk (3rd), Byron (5th), Lexington (6th), Eureka (7th), Sesser-Valier (8th) and New Berlin (10th). Meanwhile, Dwight earned the top Small Class Sectional score (88.53) in the state this year.

MEDIUM

Oak Forest and two-time state champ Lemont placed second and third in the state a year ago, respectively, behind St. Viator, who did not qualify for state after moving up to the Large Class in 2013. Yet it was upstart Tinley Park who edged the Bengals and Indians to win the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional crown and appears to be a top contender in the Medium Class in 2013. Columbia’s adjustment to the Medium Class resulted in the highest Sectional score (89.77) in the state in the class, while perennial Medium Class contenders Vernon Hills (4th), Highland (7th) and Antioch (8th) all return after Top 10 finishes at state last year. That group also includes Wauconda, who placed sixth year ago, and was the only other school in the class to break 89 (89.40) at Sectionals in 2013.

LARGE

Defending state champ Sandburg returns in 2013 in search of the program’s fourth state cheer title and enters on a high note after winning the Riverside-Brookfield Sectional, which included a trio of Top 5 teams from the 2012 state meet (Marist-3rd, Conant-5th). Lockport, who placed second in the state last year, was the third of that trio and placed fourth at Sectionals this year to punch its ticket back to Bloomington. Providence Catholic also returns after winning a Sectional crown in 2013. The Celtics were a one-point deduction shy of being the state runner-up a year ago and ultimately earned fourth place. Conant, the 2010 state champ and 2011 runner-up, also won a Sectional crown this year with a team total score of 92.60

COED

Rich Central had never finished in the Top 10 in any class in the history of the IHSA cheer tournament until a year ago, when the Lady Olympian’s burst onto the scene and claimed the Coed Class state title by topping runner-up Barrington by nearly two full points (91.00-89.06). Both teams are back again in 2013 and both finished second at their respective Sectionals. Bolingbrook bested Rich Central at the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional, while Buffalo Grove took the Rolling Meadows Sectional crown with a score of 93.33, making them one of three teams in the Coed Class to score 90 or better at the Sectional level this season. Riverside-Brookfield Sectional champ Downers Grove South has been the model of consistency, finishing in the Top 5 in the Coed Class in seven of the eight IHSA state final meets.
