The 38th installment of the IHSA Girls Badminton State Finals is set to unfold this weekend at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The finals, which EIU began hosting in 2006, will be held in the Student Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday, May 16-17.

The NFHS Network will cover the final rounds of the tournament live on Saturday via www.IHSA.tv. The semifinal matches and final matches in both the singles and doubles fields are scheduled to air live.

Thornton Fractional South won its first-ever state title in badminton in 2013, which was also the school’s second athletic state championship following the girl’s bowling team’s title run in 1990. TF South, who placed second in 2011, returns senior Jessica Gomez, who is the tournament’s No. 1 seed in the Singles bracket after placing fourth a year ago. The Rebels also enter with the No. 1 Doubles seed with the tandem of junior Jenna Pasko and senior Cassie Breshock. Pasko was a part of a doubles team that placed second in the state last year.

Gomez’s No. 1 seed is impressive, especially given that defending state champ Stephanie Lin of Lyons returns to the field. Lin, who is the No. 2 seed this season as a junior, could become the eighth individual in state history to win two Singles titles.

Naperville Central and Fremd tied for second-place last year, as both teams accumulated 12 total points, four off the pace of TF South’s winning total of 16. Both return strong Singles players in Fremd senior Angela Wu (No. 4 seed), a quarterfinalist in 2013, and Naperville Central junior Allison Ma (No. 5 seed).

Rounding out the Top 5 Singles seeds are Hinsdale South freshman Judy Yang and Fremd senior Angela Wu, who reached the quarterfinals a year ago before being edged by the eventual runner-up in three games.

Buffalo Grove could be poised to win its first trophy since placing second in 2010 on the strength of its doubles play. The Bison have the No. 2 and No. 3 seeded Doubles teams in the junior tandem of Julie Jambrone and Katelyn Sommers and the senior pair of Mady Berns and Madison Fortman, respectively.

Prospect’s junior duo of Jessica Hirsh and Stephanie Venturelli earned the No. 4 seed in the Doubles bracket. The pair got good experience a year ago at the state tourney, as they won three matches before falling in the quarterfinals.
