The 2020 IHSA Girls Bowling State Finals take center stage at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford on Friday and Saturday, February 21-22.

Harlem fell 99 pins shy of its third consecutive team state championship a year ago, as O’Fallon claimed the crown. The Panthers won’t be back to defend their title, making the seven-time state champion Huskies one of the favorites. Junior Olivia Watton (37th in 2019, 2,340) is a veteran with state experience for Harlem.

Minooka’s third-place finish a year ago marked the third trophy in school history. The Indians current collection doesn’t include a state title trophy, but that could change on Saturday. Minooka returns three bowlers who scored 2,304 or higher at last year’s state meet, including junior Kiara Backstrom, who was ninth individually in 2019 with a score of 2,477.

Joliet West just missed its second trophy in program history a year ago when the Tigers were fourth, which would have been the school’s first since winning state in 2016. Freshman Malaya Chavez (1,215) paced West to a team Sectional title last week, while Barbara Lunsford (2,368) was two pins shy of a Top 30 individual finish at state a year ago as a junior.

Seven of the eight bowlers who helped roll Lockport to a Top 5 finish in the state year ago are back in 2020, including junior Chloe Siezega, who placed fourth individually with a score of 2,531. The Porters experience paid off at Sectionals, as they won the team crown with the state’s second-best Sectional pinfall (6,201) and senior Samantha Traina (1,336) emerged as the individual champ.

Oregon/Winnebago Coop is a team to watch this weekend at the Cherry Bowl. The Coop is making its first team state final appearance, and comes with the momentum of having the state’s third-best Sectional score (6,182) paced by junior Rebbeca Meyers’ tally of 1,353.

Sycamore (6,002) and Mascoutah (5,975) are also rising programs to keep an eye on after posting Top 5 Sectional team scores last week. Sycamore features individual Sectional champ Megan Kolberg (1,394) and had its first Top 10 state final finish in over a decade in 2019 when the Spartans were ninth. Mascoutah has never placed in the Top 10, but fellow individual Sectional champ Coryanne Bean (1,456) and company hope to change that this weekend.

Buffalo Grove (5,787) and York rounded out this year’s group of Sectional team champions. Junior Sara Clay (1,296) and senior Rose Klinger (1,207) led their respective squads at Sectionals. York has never placed in the Top 10, while Buffalo Grove’s last finish there was in 2002.

Individual Sectional champ junior Gillian Czubernat (1,290) helped guide her Downers Grove South squad to the state meet, while fellow Sectional champs Angel Heck (1,303) of Morris and Jasmine McKeel (1,353) of Wauconda will be names to watch on the scoreboard after they qualified individually.

The Wheelchair Division will include five competitors in 2020, including Belleville East sophomore Annaliese Baumann, Mascoutah junior Olivia Meyer, and Triad senior Chenoa Stokes, as well as a tandem from Elk Grove Village in senior Sonia Sanchez-Corrillo and junior Natalia Villegas. Moyer is the division’s two-time defending state champ, having followed her 869 in 2018 with an 806 a year ago.
